Midcoast Conservancy protects and promotes healthy lands, waters and communities.

And not just any lands, waters and communities. Dave named this company after Sheepscot Lake, and the Sheepscot river valley where he spent so much of his childhood, and where now Midcoast Conservancy does so much of its good work.

Granted, Dave is getting on in years. But back in the day, when he was growing up, trails in Maine were hard to come by. So five years ago, when he passed a trailhead marker on the side of a road near his parents’ house, he turned the car around and pulled over. Soon after, he became a member of the conservancy that’s not only protecting those landscapes but also creating access for new generations of outdoor enthusiasts.

Which brings us to Race Through the Woods. Each fall, runners converge at Hidden Valley Nature Center, a thousand-acre “community forest,” to participate in one of three races: a 13.1-mile half-marathon, a 5.5-mile run or an obstacle course for kids 10 and under (the most entertaining, obviously).

Michael and Dave flew back to Maine to document the 2018 event.
